Wie riecht eigentlich Erinnerung?

What does memory actually smell like?

Why fragrances go straight to the heart (and brain)

You smell sunscreen – and suddenly you're 14 again, somewhere on the beach, your skin sticky with salt water, some summer hit from 2012 is playing in the background, and someone is calling for you. You grin. And you wonder: What was that all about?!

Welcome to the world of your nose. 🧠💥
Because what many underestimate is that smell is pure emotion. Scents are the secret gatekeepers to your memories – often faster than any photo or song lyrics.

🧠 What's actually going on in your head?

In short: Your brain loves smells.

To put it in more detail: When you perceive a scent, your nose doesn't just sniff – it scans tiny scent molecules floating through the air towards you. These molecules land in your olfactory mucosa , a high-tech organ located high up in your nose.

From there, it goes directly to the limbic system – the emotional center of your brain. And that's exactly where memory is located.

This means that smells go directly to your feelings and memories via the shortest route – without going through reason.
That's why a fragrance can instantly make you smile – or give you goosebumps before you even know why.

💡 Why does no one smell the same?

Because everyone has their own library. What smells like "summer vacation" to you smells like "stomach ache at the swimming pool" to someone else.
Our brain links smells with emotions as we experience them, storing them forever – like a scent diary.

A few classics:

  • The smell of fresh grass = school sports (yay or meh?)
  • Vanilla = Grandma's Kitchen
  • Cinnamon = December vibes
  • Perfume from ex = please delete, thank you

This isn't esotericism, this is biology

Studies have shown that smells are more strongly linked to memories than images or sounds.
You might remember the smell of your first perfume – but what exactly did your favorite song sound like when you were 13?

Furthermore: Smells are extremely long-lasting in memory. Even Alzheimer's patients can sometimes still react to smells from decades ago.

🚀 Time travel in seconds

What does that mean for you in everyday life?

👉 Fragrances are your shortcut to certain feelings.
Do you want to feel braver? Calmer? More energized? Then you can use your favorite scent as an emotional hack .

And since you always have your phone with you anyway, wouldn't it be pretty smart if your fragrance came along with you?

(Spoiler alert: That's exactly where our fragrance pods come in 😉 )

❤️ What is your most powerful fragrance moment?

We all have that one smell that instantly transports us to another time.
Maybe your dad's aftershave. Or chlorinated water. Or a very specific shower gel from 2009.

Tell us about your fragrance moment in the comments!
We celebrate your stories – and maybe one day we'll even smell them.

Note:
Your nose often knows more about you than you do yourself.
And sometimes just a touch of lavender is enough – and you're 10 again, in your pajamas, with hot cocoa on the sofa.

Fragrance is emotion.
Scent is memory.
Scent is… your superpower. 💥👃
